On September 1, the summer fishing moratorium in Weihai officially ended. After four months of quiet, the fishing port bustled with activity once again, and the annual “Opening of the Sea” ceremony took place as scheduled. Kim Woo-joo, a South Korean international student at the School of Cultural & Communication at Shandong University (Weihai), stepped out of the classroom and headed to the waterfront to immerse himself in the folk customs of Weihai’s fishing community.
Having lived in Weihai for several years, this was her first time experiencing the city’s first catch of the fishing season. “I can feel the locals’ deep respect for the sea,” she added.
Kim Woo-joo was deeply captivated by the lively and vibrant scene at the event: the resounding beats of the fishermen’s drums, people dancing in rhythm to the music, lion and dragon dances, and the thunderous clanging of gongs and drums—all brimming with energy. Kim Woo-joo raised her phone to capture these memorable moments and even took the initiative to ask one of the local women for drumming tips, trying her hand at it herself.
As a deep, resonant ship’s horn blared, over a hundred fishing boats flying the Five-Star Red Flag formed a neat formation, cast off one after another, and set sail for the vast blue sea. “Wow, that’s spectacular! Seeing so many boats heading out to sea together is truly awe-inspiring!” Kim Woo-joo exclaimed with genuine admiration.
After the departure ceremony concluded, Kim Woo-joo visited a local seafood market. “There’s such a wide variety of seafood here, and it’s all incredibly fresh!” Afterwards, Kim Woo-joo sampled authentic Weihai fisherman’s cuisine.
The entire immersive experience proved highly rewarding for Kim Woo-joo. He said that this first catch of the fishing season trip allowed him to truly understand Weihai’s fundamental character as a city that was born of the sea and thrives through its cultivation. This single first catch of the fishing season and this encounter also became his most vivid lesson in understanding China’s coastal culture.
